The Depths of Sorrow (April Fools)

 Kate Robinson, News Editor

4/6/10

Attention students of Upson-Lee! An amazing opportunity to gain artistic experience is making its way to Thomaston. The Lifetime Movie Network is filming its newest movie, “The Depths of Sorrow,” and Thomaston is the lucky town that gets to host the production. Lifetime has contacted UL with the news that movie producers are looking for high school aged extras.

The movie will chronicle the lives of typical Thomaston teenagers. Kelena Gomez and Smiley Cyrus will star alongside Flario Lopez and Snob Lowe. Locations featured in the movie will include Thomaston hot-spots like Sprewell Bluff, Wal-Mart, The Ritz, the old Bostwick’s building, and multiple law offices around town.

“I am so super-duper excited to get to come to such a great and booming town like Thomaston. I feel sure this location and movie will take my already awesome career to new heights,” Smiley Cyrus said.

Filming dates are not decided yet, however, it will start sometime this summer. Sign-ups will be held at the Civic Center within the next two weeks.

Top Seven New AP Classes (April Fools)

Looking for new electives for next year? Look no further! UL will now be offering many new AP courses. The top seven are as follows: AP Grocery Shopping, AP Button Sewing, AP Facebook 101, AP Driver’s Ed, AP Driver’s Ed Helper (for the 85 out of 90 days students won’t be in AP Driver’s Ed), AP Truck Driving, and AP Finger Painting.

Each of these classes will engage the student in a fun filled learning atmosphere. New standards have already been approved for these courses. An example of one of the important standards in AP Facebook 101 is Standard FB-13, “The student will show examples of commenting, messaging, and status updating.” This is an important thing to know in order to master Facebook. Other concepts such as liking posts and adding flair will be taught in the later part of the course.

Freshman Jordan Watkins said, “It would be fun to take something like AP Finger Painting! Maybe then I could pass it, regular art is too hard.”

It is a requirement that students take at least one of these seven classes. So make sure to talk to a guidance counselor to sign up ASAP!

On November 5-12, Upson-Lee held its first annual book fair in the Upson-Lee Media Center. The book fair included books from many well-known authors such as Avi, Heather Hepler, and Stephanie Meyer.  The proceeds from the book fair went to the media center to purchase books. The book fair sparked interest among many students and the faculty here at UL.

“We are so excited to be having our first book fair,” Media Specialist Sandi Waddell said.  “The teachers and students here at UL have really shown an interest, and we hope to have many more book fairs to come.”

“I think that it’s really great that we finally got a book fair,” sophomore Stefanie Gates said.

Why the Flags?

Since 2007, our school has had a tradition: to place American flags in front of our school every September 11. The flags were donated by Lucinda Bentley and backed by Susan Peyton and the Student Council. When asked why it was important to keep this tradition going, Student Council President Michael Strickland said,

“It is important to remember this day because it is one that will forever live in the hearts of every American. We must remember both those who lost their lives tragically on this day and also those who gave their live heroically trying to save others.”

These flags can be seen in front of ULHS.
