Washington Youth Tour: A Trip of a Lifetime

Have you heard of the program Youth Leadership Upson? This program is compiled of thirteen students chosen for outstanding leadership ability and community service and is sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. This past year I had the privilege of being chosen as one of the thirteen students for Youth Leadership Upson, and I later received the Hubert Hancock Award. The whole experience was amazing. I don’t even know where to begin.

First, I want to thank Upson EMC for sending me on one of the most life changing, character building, leadership promoting trips of my life. After receiving the incredible honor of the Hubert Hancock Award, I went to Washington, D.C. with 104 other Georgia delegates.

I had no idea what I was getting myself into. By the first night, I already had 104 new best friends. The other teens were awesome. All of them were the top students in their schools with personalities to match. It was extremely refreshing.

From the first night on, we never stopped. We were constantly doing something or going somewhere from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., and I savored every moment.

I had the privilege to be chosen as one of the top five representatives for the Youth Leadership Council and had the opportunity to give a speech in the amphitheatre at Arlington National Cemetery. This was a great honor, and I will never forget it.

Since returning home, I have noticed the confidence I now have in leading others and the leadership skills I’ve gained from the experience. Every day we were inspired by our forefathers as we toured many monuments and famous building. There are too many to list, so I will only mention my favorite spots: going to the top of the Washington monument, the Holocaust Museum, Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum, and getting to meet and listen to our state representatives.

The co-directors, Mrs. Jane Walk and Mrs. Gale Cutler, were true role models. They made the trip smooth and efficient. We rarely had to stand in line for more than twenty minutes. They, with the help of fourteen chaperones, made the trip unforgettable.

If you have the chance, be sure to apply for YLU and this once in a lifetime opportunity. Trust me, you will not regret it.

Ingredients
24 Oreo Double Stuff cookies
12 miniature peanut butter cups
12 malted milk balls
1 cup candy corn
4 ounces chocolate frosting
4 ounces white frosting
red food coloring
Directions
1) Place one Oreo cookie as the base. Put one teaspoon of chocolate frosting on top.
2) Place one small peanut butter cup on it’s side so that the top and bottom are perpendicular to the base — and stuck in the frosting. Place a teaspoon of chocolate frosting on the top of the p-butter cup.
3) For the second cookie. Stick some candy corn into the Oreo filling along one edge for the feathers — pointy side down. They should fan out around the edge. If you have trouble doing this, you can help them stick with some white frosting.
4) Place this second Oreo cookie (the tail) on it’s edge and sticking to a dab of brown frosting on the back of the peanut butter cup.
5) Place a dab of chocolate frosting on top of the peanut butter up (for the head). Place a malted milk ball on top for the head.
6) Take a small amount of the white frosting in a separate dish. Mix in red food coloring.
7)Use a toothpick with the white and red colors to place eyes and wattle. You can pinch off the small pointy top of a candy corn and dip it in brown frosting for the beak.
8) Your turkey is complete!
